Worked example

The scenario below is illustrative. It is not a description of the reviewer’s business; it shows how an electrical business like the one in the review would use Lux Meter Pro.

The situation

Picture a commercial electrical contractor with around twenty field engineers maintaining offices, retail units and apartment blocks. Emergency lighting is recurring work: a monthly function test on every luminaire, a full rated-duration test once a year, defects logged, and a record kept for the responsible person at each building.

Done on paper, the test is only half the job. Engineers fill in a logbook sheet on site, the sheet goes back to the office, somebody types up the periodic test certificate, and the client gets it a week later. Across dozens of buildings and several engineers, the admin behind the testing is where the hours and the mistakes accumulate.

How Lux Meter Pro fits

Lux Meter Pro keeps the test and the paperwork in the same place. The engineer runs the emergency light test from the Readings tab, with the app timing the test and the rest period, and the result is logged against the building rather than on a loose sheet.

When the testing is finished, the Cert It section fills the Emergency Lighting Periodic Test certificate and the Emergency Lighting Logbook from the business details, registration number and signature already saved in Settings. The engineer checks the entries, adds observations and defects, and exports a PDF that can be emailed to the client from site.

Every engineer produces the same certificate layout, so the office is no longer reconciling five handwriting styles into one template. Because the PDFs carry the date and the building, the record a fire officer or insurer asks for is the one the engineer already sent.

What it changes for the business

  • No retyping: the certificate is produced from the test, not reconstructed from a sheet a week later.
  • Consistent documents across the whole team, carrying the contractor's own branding and signature.
  • The client gets the certificate the same day, which is what keeps a maintenance contract renewing.

Key takeaway

Combining the test, the logbook and the certificate in one app is where a contractor with recurring emergency lighting work saves the most hours, because the saving happens on every visit.

The certificate records the test; it does not replace carrying out the monthly and annual tests correctly to BS 5266-1. Where a specification calls for emergency illuminance to be verified to BS EN 1838, use a calibrated meter for those readings.
